Best Balance Bike For A 1 Year Old
Most balance bikes are designed for children aged 2 and older. If you have an active 1 year old and are looking to get an early start with riding balance bikes there are still a few options available to you. Here are our favourite balance bikes for 1 year old children. The first balance bike is suitable for children aged 1 year and up while the others are for children aged 18 months and up.
Chillafish Bunzi Gradual Balance Bike
This is a lightweight plastic balance bike which is very light and easy for a child to control. This bike actually has two positions which you can select depending on the age of your child. The first position is actually a 3-wheel mode with the seat in the lower of two positions (22cm). As your child gets bigger you switch to a 2-wheel mode with a higher seat (25cm). Having the bike in the 3 wheel mode with two wheels very close together at the back adds extra stability for very young children. It also means the bike will stay upright when they stop or get off.
The wheels have synthetic rubber non marking tyres which means this balance bike can be used indoors as well as outdoors.
The seat has an inbuilt handle to make it easy for a child to lift and carry the bike. There is also a storage compartment in the seat which adds a fun element to the bike. Useful for storing snacks or favourite toys !
This balance bike is recommended for children aged 1-3 years old.
In our opinion this is a very well build balance bike and would be a perfect introduction to balance bikes for most 1 year old children.
Yvolution Y Velo Junior Balance Bike
Another very light balance bike, this one is suitable for children aged 18 months and older and has an aluminium frame. Like the Chillafish it has a 3 wheel and a 2 wheel mode. The seat height can be adjusted between 28 and 36cm so the bike will grow with your child. The wheels are bigger than the Chillafish so slightly better for outdoor use.
Another bonus is that the handle bar height is also adjustable.
This is a very good quality and well made balance bike and might be the better choice for slightly older children. However if your child is less than 18 months or quite small for their age you should probably choose the Chillafish Bunzi.
The Yvolution y Velo Junior balance bike costs from around £50 depending on which colour you choose. See complete selection here.
Strider 12 Classic Balance Bike
This is one of the most popular models of balance bikes around and has close to a 5 star rating on Amazon. It is for children aged 18 months and up so suitable for older 1 year olds. The Strider 12 Classic is a metal framed bike and is very light at just 3kg.
This is a balance bike that really does grow with your child. Both the seat and handle bars are height adjustable making the bike suitable for 18 month to 3 year old children. You can also purchase separately seat and handle bar extensions for taller children and children aged 4 and up. The lowest seat height is 27cm.
This is not a cheap bike costing about £66 (current price) but is good quality, well built and should last until your child moves onto a bike with pedals. The wheels are puncture proof and are made from a solid EVA polymer exclusive to Strider. If you get a nail or something similar in the tyre you can just pull it out without causing any damage. At the same time the wheels still have enough bounce in them to give a smooth ride almost like an air filled tyre.
